GSPL Book Series - Dr Mariana Velasco-Rivera

What really makes a constitution hard to amend? In The Politics of Constitutional Rigidity, Dr Mariana Velasco-Rivera (Maynooth) challenges the assumption that strict amendment rules determine constitutional endurance. Focusing on Mexico - home to one of the world’s most frequently amended constitutions - she develops a new framework for understanding constitutional change as shaped by an “economy of change”, where political parties, constitutional culture, and strategic actors play a decisive role. The book offers a timely rethinking of rigidity and the forces that drive constitutional transformation.

In this book discussion, the UNSW Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, as part of the Greater Sydney Public Law Book Series, hosts Assistant Professor Velasco-Rivera, in conversation with Associate Professor Paul Kildea (UNSW) and Dr Elisabeth Perham (UNSW). Dr Perham will also serve as Chair.

The event will be broadcast online via Teams.

The Great Sydney Public Law Book Series brings together public law academics from across greater Sydney to discuss global books in the field of public law. It is convened by colleagues at UNSW, USYD, UTS, WSU, and Macquarie.
