Social Justice Interns



Jonathan Dillon (Semester II, 2008)

Jonathan is in his final year of an International Studies/Law degree with a major in both Globalisation and Spanish & Latin American studies.  The work that he is doing for the Centre includes work on the Indigenous Rights, Land and Governance Project with a focus on the Northern Territory Intervention. Jonathan is also providing research assistance for the Climate Change 'Refugees' and International Law project.

Jemma Hollands (Semester I, 2008)

Jemma Hollonds is in her final year of an Arts/Law degree, majoring in Politics and International Relations. Jemma will be assisting the Centre in a number of project areas, including the website project on the Northern Territory intervention and the Charter of Rights project.

Talia Epstein (Semester II, 2007)

Talia is in her final year of an International Studies/Law degree, majoring in Globalisation studies. She will be assisting the Centre in a range of areas, including the Indigenous Rights, Land and Governance project in relation to the Northern Territory intervention, and the Charter of Rights project.

Ya'el Frisch (Semester I, 2007)

Ya'el is in her final year of a Social Science/Law degree, majoring in Politics and Social Policy. She will be assisting the Centre to make submissions in relation to the review of legislation on the proscription of terrorist organisations, and will also be contributing to the newly formed campaign for a NSW Charter of Rights.

Allison Rickett (Semester II, 2006)

Allison Rickett is in her final year of a Science/Law degree, majoring in psychology. Allison will be researching the constitutional implications surrounding anti-terrorism legislation as well as the scope for the introduction of a Bill of Rights in Australia

David Hume (Semester I, 2006)

David Hume is in his final year of an BA(Hons)/LLB. He completed his Honours degree in Philosophy in 2004. David will be assisting the Centre in areas including proposed sedition laws and amendments to telecommunications interception laws and electoral laws.

Frances Foster-Thorpe (Semester I, 2005)

Frances Foster-Thorpe is in her final year of an Arts(Hons)/Law degree. She completed a double major in politics and industrial relations, and wrote a thesis on the validity of scientific approaches to public policy. She will be researching the potential of bills of rights at a local government level.

Lara Kostakidis-Lianos (Semester II, 2004)

Lara Kostakidis-Lianos is in her final year of an LLB (Graduate). She completed her BA (Hons) at the University of Sydney majoring in modern history, and wrote a thesis on mandatory sentencing in the Northern Territory. She will be assisting on areas ranging from the ACT Charter of Human Responsibilities and the potential impact of a treaty on Indigenous health, to anti-terrorism legislation and the freedom of political communication.

Michael Walton (Semester I, 2004)

Michael Walton is in his last six months of an LLB (Graduate Law). Michael has come to the law after ten years computer programming in the finance industry. He will be helping with the Centre's research and papers in such diverse areas as an Australian Republic, ACT Human Rights Act, Australia and International Law, and indigenous health and a treaty.

Katherine Fallah (Semester II, 2003)

Katherine Fallah is in her fifth year of a combined B Juris/LLB program, having majored in politics and international relations. Katherine will be undertaking research into the constitutionality of proposed legislation that would make it an offence to burn the flag. She will also contribute to the Centre's Bill of Rights and International Law resource pages.

Nick Hume (Semester I, 2003)

Nick Hume is in his final year of a combined BA (Hons)/LLB program. Nick majored in politics and wrote his thesis on law enforcement threats to privacy. Nick will be researching indigenous political participation in Queensland and will contribute to the Centre's response to the ACT Bill of Rights report due out later this year.

Vanessa Bosnjak (Semester II, 2002)

Vanessa Bosnjak is in her second year of the Bachelor of Laws Graduate Program. She completed her first degree, Bachelor of Science (Hons), at the University of Sydney. During her internship, Vanessa will look at the question of whether economic, social and cultural rights should be included in a Bill of Rights. Her research will contribute to the Centre's submission to the ACT Bill of Rights Consultative Committee.

Iain Gentle (Semester I, 2002)

Iain is in his third and final year of the Bachelor of Law Graduate Program. He completed his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts and Science majoring in Economics and Japan Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle with one year spent on exchange in the Law Faculty of Kobe University, Japan. His research project for this semester will look at the boundaries of the constitutionally implied freedom of political communication in Australia and consider directions for its future growth.

Paul Kildea (Semester II, 2001)

Paul Kildea is in the final semester of his Arts/Law degree, having majored in History. During his internship at the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, Paul will be looking at the question of whether an Australian Bill of Rights should include special rights for Indigenous peoples, and what those special rights might be. Initially, this will involve an examination of Bills of Rights in other countries, as well as proposed rights for Indigenous peoples under international law.

Melissa Lewis (Semester II, 2001)

Melissa Lewis is in her 5th year of an Arts/Law degree, having majored in Political Science. During her internship at the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, Melissa will be writing a paper on the scope for an equality clause within an Australian Bill of Rights. This will involve an examination of the approaches taken in other jurisdictions, such as the United States, Britain, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada, and an assessment of possibilities in the Australian context.
